Backlight Bleed Test for LCD Screens

The backlight bleed test presents four controlled dark fields so you can compare a fixed bright edge or corner with viewing-angle-dependent glow. Optional zone labels and private session notes help you repeat the observation without covering the test surface permanently.

How to run the backlight bleed test

  1. Begin at your normal seated position. Dim the room enough to see dark-scene behavior, but keep the display at a comfortable brightness you use in practice. The webpage cannot read or change that hardware setting.
  2. Open pure black in fullscreen. Let ordinary site chrome disappear, hide the tool controls, and scan the four corners, each edge, and the center. Tap the field or press C when you need the controls again.
  3. Step through 2%, 5%, and 10% fields. Note whether the same patch remains fixed, blends into the requested grey, or becomes part of a larger near-black uniformity pattern.
  4. Change only your viewing position. Move slightly left, right, higher, and lower without tilting or pressing the screen. An appearance that shifts strongly with the line of sight deserves different wording from a fixed edge leak.
  5. Compare normal dark content. Record whether the area is visible in the films, games, or applications where it matters. The session note field clears when the page reloads and is not sent to the site.

Bleed, IPS glow, and clouding are not interchangeable

Possible backlight bleed

A fixed bright area near an LCD frame edge or corner may indicate light leakage through the panel assembly. The apparent severity still depends on backlight level, room light, displayed content, and panel processing.

Angle-dependent IPS glow

IPS glow is an optical viewing-angle effect often seen toward corners on dark content. If the bright region changes shape or intensity as your head moves, describe that behavior instead of calling every glow a backlight defect.

Clouding or mura

Broader patches, bands, or cloudy areas may be described as dark-field non-uniformity or mura. These effects can appear away from the frame and may change across grey levels, temperature, local dimming states, and content.

A useful angle comparison

Backlight bleed test: fixed zones and moving glow

First map the apparent area from a centered, normal viewing distance. Turn on the zone labels briefly if location words help, then remove them for inspection. Keep brightness, room light, and the requested field unchanged while moving only your head by a modest amount.

A patch that travels, expands, or fades with viewing position is more consistent with an angle-sensitive optical effect. A fixed edge location may be more consistent with bleed, but the backlight bleed test still cannot reveal the assembly-level cause. Check the same area during representative dark content before assigning practical significance.

Camera exposure can exaggerate dark glow

Automatic cameras brighten dark scenes and may combine several frames. If you take a documentation photo, record exposure settings and also write down what your eyes saw. Do not infer a measured severity from a processed image.

No physical panel manipulation

This workflow intentionally offers no pressure, rubbing, heating, tapping, screw, or disassembly advice. A browser pattern cannot repair backlight leakage, and physical intervention risks damage. Use retailer, manufacturer, or qualified service guidance.

Can this backlight bleed test judge a warranty claim?

No. It helps you describe a visual observation. Compare the same area in normal content and realistic room lighting, then use the applicable retailer or manufacturer policy for any warranty decision.

Why does a phone photo show more glow than I can see?

Automatic exposure, night modes, high ISO, image processing, and a longer shutter time can lift dark areas. A photograph may document location, but it should not replace your direct observation under recorded conditions.

Should I press a bright edge to reduce it?

No. Do not press, rub, tap, heat, loosen screws, or disassemble the panel. Physical manipulation can damage the display and may affect warranty coverage.
